Background of the study:
Home automation has emerged as a critical component of modern living, providing convenience, energy efficiency, and enhanced security. In Sokoto South LGA, Sokoto State, traditional home automation systems are often limited to basic remote control functions and lack integration with voice-activated interfaces. The development of an IoT‐based smart voice-controlled home automation system offers a transformative solution by combining IoT connectivity, artificial intelligence, and natural language processing to create an intuitive, user-friendly control system (Ibrahim, 2023). This system enables residents to manage lighting, temperature, security systems, and appliances using voice commands, thereby enhancing ease of use and accessibility. By integrating sensors, smart devices, and cloud computing, the system continuously monitors home conditions and adjusts settings dynamically based on user preferences and real-time environmental data (Adeniyi, 2024). Voice recognition algorithms ensure that commands are executed accurately, while the system’s connectivity with mobile applications allows for remote management. The implementation of such a system not only improves energy efficiency by optimizing device usage but also enhances overall home security through automated alerts and monitoring. In addition, the system supports integration with other smart home technologies, creating a comprehensive ecosystem that simplifies daily tasks and improves quality of life (Udo, 2025). As urban lifestyles become increasingly demanding, the adoption of voice-controlled home automation represents a significant step toward achieving a more comfortable, efficient, and secure living environment.
Statement of the problem:
Traditional home automation systems in Sokoto South LGA are often limited in functionality and rely on manual inputs or simple remote controls, which do not fully meet the evolving needs of modern households (Ibrahim, 2023). These systems lack the sophistication required to dynamically adjust home environments in response to real-time conditions, resulting in suboptimal energy usage and inconvenience for residents. The absence of voice control functionality means that users must interact with multiple devices through separate interfaces, leading to a fragmented and inefficient home management experience. Moreover, the lack of integration between various smart devices impedes the development of a cohesive home automation ecosystem, while the inability to process natural language commands limits user accessibility and adoption (Adeniyi, 2024). Financial and technical constraints further restrict the upgrade of existing systems, leaving many households without the benefits of modern automation. Without an IoT-based, voice-controlled solution, residents are unable to fully optimize their energy consumption, maintain home security, or enjoy the convenience of a unified automation system. This gap in technology not only impacts daily living but also hinders the broader adoption of smart home practices in the region, affecting overall quality of life (Udo, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To design and develop an IoT-based smart voice-controlled home automation system.
To evaluate the system’s effectiveness in improving energy efficiency and user convenience.
To recommend strategies for integrating the system with existing smart home devices.
Research questions:
How effective is the voice-controlled system in managing home automation tasks in real time?
What improvements in energy efficiency and operational convenience are observed after implementation?
How can the system be integrated with existing home automation infrastructures to create a unified ecosystem?
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it introduces a cutting-edge IoT-based voice-controlled home automation system that enhances user convenience, energy efficiency, and home security. By enabling natural language control and real-time device integration, the system provides a seamless, intuitive experience that can transform modern living in Sokoto South LGA. Its adoption will promote technological advancement in home management and improve overall quality of life.
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the design, development, and evaluation of an IoT-based smart voice-controlled home automation system in Sokoto South LGA, Sokoto State. It does not extend to commercial or industrial automation systems.
Definitions of terms:
IoT (Internet of Things): A network of interconnected devices that share real-time data.
Voice-Controlled System: A system that allows users to control devices through voice commands.
Home Automation: The automatic control of household systems such as lighting, temperature, and security.
